Kayla adjusted the shoulder strap from her pack. The device wasn’t heavy or that big, but after such a long hike, the pressure increased on her shoulders with every step, particularly the last mile.

Kayla had checked the maps before she left, and there was only one hospital in the area where Marcy could have gone.

Kayla had done everything she could to ensure she didn’t draw attention to herself on the road because while she wanted to help others, she also knew the world was still dangerous. A girl traveling alone could be an easy target for someone.

Not that Kayla wouldn’t go down without a fight, but she thought it best to avoid the battle altogether if she could. A lesson she heeded from her father, which she had used more than once in her lifetime.

When Kayla neared the hospital, she veered toward the main road again, leading her into the parking lot.

Kayla imagined the people who needed help and how many of them there might be, but when she saw the hospital parking lot, she had underestimated the hospital’s predicament.

Most of the vehicles had been moved, pushed aside from the parking lot, and crashed into one another around the parking lot’s perimeter, and the parking lot was filled with tents.

Kayla waited on the road before she moved closer. She wanted to better understand what might be waiting for her on her approach to the hospital. But the longer she studied the parking lot, the more Kayla was sure it was abandoned.

But Kayla drew her weapon, keeping up her guard as she moved through the parking lot toward the hospital.

The empty tents she passed looked like they’d been constructed after the EMP. She saw body bags filled and stacked off to the side. Used and discarded medical equipment, masks, gloves, and IVs littered the pavement like trash.

But there were no signs of anyone else in the area, and Kayla focused on the building ahead. It was like walking through a graveyard, which contradicted the beacon of hope that the hospital was supposed to represent.

The more body bags Kayla passed, the more she realized that perhaps her father was right about not being able to save people. Maybe she had waited too long. Perhaps she was too late.

When Kayla finally emerged from the ghost tents in the parking lot and reached the front entrance to the hospital, she saw the doors pried open, the interior shadowy and foreboding. She squinted, trying to see inside without getting too close, but it was too dark.

Kayla moved closer, keeping her pistol up and at the ready, finger near the trigger. She had her bow and arrows with her, but for now, the gun was a more effective weapon in the close quarters of inside a building.

But while Kayla couldn’t see anything, the smell was evident. The rotten stench of dead flesh and decay radiated from inside. It was powerful enough to make her gag, and she tied a bandana around her face to help mask the smell, but it didn’t completely disappear.
